The critics reviews are terrible and I was on the fence about seeing
this movie. Zhang Yimou’s films from the last ten years had been
disappointing starting with “Hero”. I felt he caved in too much to
commercial interests and government interference. But make no mistake,
the critics are overly harsh on this film. Flowers of War is a solid
film that worth seeing. It’s Zhang’s best in ten years.

  1. About the “white man saving the native” angle – this is unfair
criticism. Bale did have a lot of screen time but the movie’s heart
really lies in the heroic act of 13 courtesans. Chinese audience totally
get the reference when Yu Mo says prostitutes in China have a reputation

Lily, Chloe, James,
Linda

they are oblivious of their country’s troubles and have no national
conscience – and they decide to change that with their actions. Bale’s
character and transformation are really inspired by the 13 women and is
the backdrop, not the center of the story, hence the title “Flowers of
    the War”.

  1. About criticism of excessive sentimentality and far-fetched plot –
Zhang used the reluctant hero archetype on Miller and the arc of story
is relatively conventional. Zhang might have also used too many slow-mo
shots and prolonged some sequences, but I feel the sentimental parts of
the story are effective and consistent with his style. The characters
are layered enough for me to believe their actions. For example, not all
the courtesans are on board to replace students. Many of the courtesans
think they are lying to the students to get them off the tower, but they
decide to actually do it. Part of that decision is the desire to do what
is courageous, and another part the motherly nature to protect the young
and vulnerable. This aspect is probably a bit understated in the film,
    but it’s clearly there.

  2. About the portrayal of Japanese soldiers – many critics accused this
movie of one dimensional in portraying Japanese soldiers, I disagree.
The most memorable Japanese character, played by Kobayashi, is obviously
very cultured and very conflicted as well. The decision to take the
student to the “party” seems to come from higher up in the military and
not Kato’s decision to make. There are some stories there in the
Japanese military I would liked to see explored. The actions of regular
Japanese soldiers portrayed in this movie, however, is supported by
historical testimonials and photographic evidence. I found them accurate
at the least and even watered-down. It’s pure hypocrisy to criticize
this movie for giving an honest portrayal of brutality during Japanese
Occupation of Nanjing and giving praises to movies that portray equally
ghastly holocaust in Germany. And accusations that this movie is
propaganda against Japan is simply unfounded – this is a war movie about
courage, sacrifice and human compassion during very extreme
circumstances. It simply make us reflect and appreciate the peace we are
    enjoying right now.

GlobalTimes (Metro
Shanghai)

Some highlight worth mentioning: The boy who played George delivered a
wonderful and nuanced performance. He even overshadows Bale in some
scenes; The Nanjing dialect in this movie is great and adds considerable
authenticity to the characters; the music is wonderfully low-key and
appropriately Chinese.

Why this Chinese is reluctant to give herself an English name

In the popular TV series Women in Shanghai, advertisement company
freshman Luo Haiyan was laughed at by her colleagues for having no
English name. “What’s your English name? You don’t have one? Uh-oh,”
scoffed Luo’s coworker Amy, a native Chinese.

In today’s China, especially in first-tier cities, it is bizarre for
young Chinese not to have an English name. When I’m having dinner at
Jing’an Temple Central Business District in downtown Shanghai, I often
hear office gossip from the next table – usually young Chinese ladies in
exquisite clothes talking about their colleagues Linda, Mary, Eric, etc.
These English names, mixed in with their Putonghua or Shanghai dialect,
sound quite funny.

Linda,
Mary,

English names have become a standard feature of China’s modern
workplace and campuses, and those who don’t have one are considered
old-fashioned or from the countryside. This is particularly true in
foreign enterprises. In Women in Shanghai, Luo finally named herself
Harriet after being embarrassed by a foreign client who failed to
pronounce her Chinese name.

  在Quora(海外版今日头条)上,有老外问过如此叁个难题……

My Chinese name Lanlan is easy enough for foreigners to pronounce.
Thanks to my parents, the simple name they gave me has yet to be
mispronounced. If someone’s Chinese name contains “difficult” characters
such as yue, lü, ruan or ce, he or she might consider an English name.
But luckily, I’ve never had this concern.

I’ve grown bored by the English names that most Chinese give
themselves, which are repetitive and uncreative. Unlike the millions of
available Chinese names, only several dozen English names are available,
of which fewer fit the taste of we Chinese.

数字:TWO, FIVE, ELEVEN…

@Lucy Tokairin:

Well, it’s quite interesting to guess a logic behind their choices.
There are few examples I actually faced while living in China.

I personally know three Penny, four Chloe, five Julia and six David.
Compared with their unique, elaborate Chinese names, their English names
are ordinary and boring. Conversely, some young people try too hard to
give themselves “creative” English names, but many of these are
laughably ridiculous.

The English naming culture is wildly
different to the Chinese naming culture, leading to a total
misunderstanding as to how to pick an English name. We laugh when we
hear Chinese with names like Furry, Eleven or Mars, but if you
understand the Chinese naming culture, you will understand how they can
adopt these names with a straight face. The main, overarching issue is
that Chinese people are taking their own Chinese naming practices and
using them to choose an English name.

  I. Names of Disney Princesses and other fiction characters, just
like:

For example, on Quora there is a post titled “what are some of the
‘best’ English names Chinese people give themselves but are not
generally found outside China,” under which netizens from around the
world shared lots of weird names such as Satan, Cherry, Rabbit, Vampire,
Yale, Harvard, Lolita, Nokia, Easy and Anyway.

  Snow White

In most cases, giving yourself an English name is a personal
preference. Having an English name can make one look more “fashionable”
or communicative, but that’s about it. Native Chinese cannot add their
self-made English names onto any official documents including ID cards
or passports. In other words, an English name is no more than a cute
nickname.

  Daenerys

When I was studying Mandarin at language school my teacher asked my
help to pick up an English name for herself. She wanted to named herself
Cinderella. I did my best to explain her that her first choice is not
the best.

Dispensable English names are to some extent seen as a social status
in China, implying that locals with English names are superior to those
without. I read in the news that a Chinese mother publicly claimed on
her social media that she would never send her children to a
kindergarten where kids have no English names. In Beijing, a
five-year-old local girl named “Lucy” refused to make friends with a
little Chinese boy who had no English name, according to Phoenix Weekly
in May 2017.

When Lindsay Jernigan, an American expat
in China, noticed how often Chinese professionals had — for lack of a
better term — “stripper” names like Candy and Cherry, she wanted to find
a way to help them out.

  II. Sweeeet adjectives, just like:

Chinese actresses Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Fan Bingbing and many others
do not have English names, and nobody would ever say that they failed to
succeed in the foreign marketplace. After all, a name is just a name.
But it cannot outshine one’s true personality and character. Having an
English name could be helpful in a globalized workplace or campus, but
it should never be one’s weapon to look down on others.

emmm…

  Honey

III. Random combinations of some girly words, just like

Shinny,

  Angelababy (!!!)

Lily…

OMG, Angelababy! She is well-known celebrity here, so pretty, how

I myself am named Sabrina and, prior to hearing this news, have
never even bothered to research its meaning. I just phoned my mom; she

Conversely, Asians are profoundly obsessed with the names they
bestow unto their offspring. Chinese in particular place great
importance in names, often connecting an unusual character for their
son’s or daughter’s given name to an otherwise common surname (e.g. Li
or Wang) to create a wholly unique identity. As a result, their names
can be very beautiful.

the names of most of my Chinese friends. They all swiftly resorted to
telling me their English name upon our first introduction, which now
makes me question whether I even know them at all since they are hiding
behind a superficial facade of utterly meaningless Westernism.
